What Dog Owners Should Know About Getting a Puppy

10 Mar 2026 · 2 min read

Bringing a puppy home is one of the most exciting decisions you'll ever make. But it's also one that deserves careful thought and preparation. Here's what every prospective dog owner should know before taking the leap.

1. Choose the Right Breed

Every breed has different needs, energy levels, and temperaments. Research thoroughly before falling in love with a look. A high-energy working breed in a small flat with long working hours is a recipe for behaviour problems.

Consider your lifestyle honestly: How active are you? How much time can you dedicate to training and exercise? Do you have children or other pets? The right match makes everything easier.

2. Puppy-Proof Your Home

Puppies explore the world with their mouths. Before bringing your new companion home, remove anything dangerous or valuable from puppy height. Secure electrical cables, move houseplants out of reach, and invest in baby gates for rooms that are off-limits.

3. Time and Commitment

Puppies need constant supervision in the early weeks. They can't be left alone for long periods and will need regular toilet breaks, feeding, play, and training sessions throughout the day.

If you work full-time, consider how you'll manage those first few months. Puppy sitters, dog walkers, or working from home arrangements may be necessary.

4. Training and Socialisation

The first 16 weeks of a puppy's life are the critical socialisation window. During this time, positive exposure to different people, animals, sounds, and environments shapes their confidence for life.

Start gentle training from day one. Short, positive sessions work best. Focus on building a bond based on trust rather than dominance — science shows us that positive reinforcement produces better, more lasting results.

5. Health Care

Register with a vet before your puppy arrives. They'll need vaccinations, microchipping, worming, and flea treatment on a regular schedule. Discuss neutering timelines with your vet — the right age varies by breed.

Pet insurance is highly recommended. Vet bills can escalate quickly, and insurance gives you peace of mind to always choose the best care.

6. Feeding and Nutrition

Puppies have specific nutritional needs that change as they grow. Feed a high-quality puppy food appropriate for their breed size. Avoid sudden diet changes — transition gradually over a week if switching brands.

Stick to a consistent feeding schedule. For young puppies, this typically means 3-4 meals a day, reducing to 2 meals as they mature.

7. House Training

Patience is key. Take your puppy outside frequently — after meals, after naps, after play, and first thing in the morning. Praise them enthusiastically when they go in the right place.

Accidents will happen. Never punish a puppy for indoor accidents — they don't understand the connection. Simply clean up and try to catch them earlier next time.

8. Exercise Needs

A common rule of thumb is 5 minutes of exercise per month of age, twice a day. Over-exercising a puppy can damage developing joints and bones. Focus on mental stimulation and play rather than long walks in the early months.

9. Grooming and Maintenance

Introduce grooming early so your puppy learns to accept handling. Regular brushing, nail trimming, ear cleaning, and teeth brushing should all become part of your routine.

10. Prepare for the Costs

Beyond the initial purchase or adoption fee, budget for ongoing costs: food, insurance, vet bills, training, grooming, toys, beds, leads, and boarding for holidays. A dog is a financial commitment for their entire life.
